Nigerian Dwarf Goats
Nigerian Dwarf goats are a smaller breed of dairy goat that originated in Africa. They can produce up to two quarts of milk each day. The milk is typically higher in butterfat, which makes for a sweeter tasting milk. Because of their smaller size, they are easier to handle than larger dairy breeds and have become popular for those with limited space. Nigerians are also known for their engaging personalities and their uncanny ability to escape the goat pen.
All of our Nigerian Dwarf goats are dual-registered with both the American Goat Society (AGS) and the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA). We also test our herd annually for CAE and Johne's. We have never had abscesses, but if we do, we will have those goats tested for CL. UPDATE: February 2020 test results came back NEGATIVE for CAE and Johne's for every goat in the herd (both Nigerians and Alpines).
The goats are currently housed in the barn with a small dry-lot. Most days, they are let out to free-range the property for a several hours. In addition to this free-range time, we feed our goats a variety of types of hay. During late pregnancy and while milking, does get a custom-mixed grain (black oil sunflower seeds, barley, oats) to maintain body condition. Fresh water is available at all times as well as free-choice cafeteria-style minerals.
Our foundation stock came from Amber and Scott McGee at Apple Tree Acres in Rumely, MI. In 2013, we added two does and one buck from diverse genetic lines to help improve our herd. Summer Solstice Constellation 2*M
Constellation (a.k.a. Stella) was the second kid born here at Summer Solstice Farms, just minutes after her brother, Bucky. Stella is spunky and an avid eater like her mother. She also loves to be scratched and rubbed when she's not chewing on a hat or coat sleeve. Stella is a powerful doe but has also shown great ability in the milk parlor. Her udder has wonderfully smooth forward attachments and good capacity.

Summer Solstice Eridanus

Eridanus ("the river" constellation) is a doe I'm very excited about. She and her sister grew quickly on pasture, no grain, and were bred for earlier kidding than is suggested for Nigerians. She kidded without trouble and has been a good mother. Her udder is wide with good size teats and orifices, just like her dam. I'm eager to see her production and components on milk test this year.

Summer Solstice Auriga

Auriga ("the charioteer" constellation) is a skittish doe who will do wonderful things if I can ever get her to settle down. Like her sister, Eridanus, she grew quickly as a young kid on pasture and was bred for her first freshening early. She kidded twins easily and has been feeding them well. While I haven't seen her udder after a 12-hour fill, I believe her mammary should be similar to her dam's. Once I can get her on the milk stand, she'll be put on milk test.

SG Dancing Angels HAW Dallas 1*M
Dallas joined Summer Solstice Farms in July 2013 with herdmate, and stand-in mother, Ginger. She has a spunky personality, loves to be around people, and eats as if she were twice her size. Dallas has matured into a very nice dual-purpose doe. She raises fat wethers for the freezer and puts high-fat milk in the pail for our cheesemaking endeavors. 2018 was her year for accolades: she earned her milk star, scored EX at linear appraisal, and was awarded her Superior Genetics designation by ADGA.

Temptation (a.k.a. Creamy) is our most determined eater. She can be found at the hay trough most of the day, and she is always the last one to come in from free-ranging. Creamy has a sweet nature, and she is always willing to approach us for a good scratch. Creamy produces just over a quart of rich milk each day with once-a-day milking. She has a firmly attached udder with smooth attachments, both front and back.

Apple Tree Acres Glamour Girl 1*M (retired from breeding 2018--still milking)
Glamour Girl (a.k.a. Nougat) is an adventurous and friendly girl who loves to be around humans. She will stand at your side all day if you give her a rub or set your hand on her back. Nougat also likes to antagonize Lassi, the Alpine goat, to see if she can improve her position in the herd. She has had great success with escaping the goat pen and finding her way into the garden. Nougat freshened for the first time in 2014 as a four-year-old. Her udder is capacious for a first-freshener with decent attachments, and she produces a very rich, creamy milk.

Avian Acres WNR Ginger (deceased January 2018)
Ginger joined Summer Solstice Farms in July 2013 along with her herdmate Dallas. She is people-friendly and has a natural mothering instinct. She freshened for the fifth time in fall 2016 (a rough kidding) and has consistently given us a bit less than a pint of milk each day. Her udder is very firmly attached, and while her udder doesn't look very capacious, she keeps a good bit of milk in there! Ginger is an easy-keeper, maintaining her weight with less grain and hay than our other Nigerians. She is perfectly content to sit by humans instead of browsing the pasture.
