Summer Solstice Farms is home to three breeds of chickens: Buff Orpingtons, Blue-Laced Red Wyandottes, and Delawares. All chickens run free-range during the day and enjoy a variety of bugs, worms, mice, greens and seeds year-round. During the winter, if the ground is covered with snow or ice, we supplement their natural diet with our own farm-grown heirloom corn, sorghum, millet, and goat milk in addition to kitchen scraps.
Every summer, we allow our broody hens to hatch out a batch of chicks and raise them to maturity. Most of the pullets stay at the farm to be the next generation of layers. The cockerels go to the freezer. We believe the natural cycle of hatching chicks results in layers that perform best in our management system. These hens are cold-hardy, excellent foragers, and prolific layers with very little supplementation.

A raccoon wiped out half of our flock in July 2017, so we no longer have eggs available. Will update when hens start laying again.
