Dairy Goat Herd Lease
We have two breeds of goats at Summer Solstice Farms, and we milk both breeds by hand year round. The Alpines give us lots of milk (about a gallon per goat each day), and the Nigerians give us rich, creamy milk (averaging 6-10% butterfat). We use our milk to make cheese, candy, and soap. And of course, we love to drink the milk, too.
We realize that not everyone has the space or time to keep their own milk goats. If you're interested in getting the milk, but want someone else to take care of the goat and milking, then a herd lease might be a good option for you. Buying a herd lease means you are leasing part of our herd of goats. You pay an initial fee to lease your share of the herd, then an additional monthly fee to cover the cost of housing, feeding, and milking the goats. We try to keep these fees reasonable (at cost) so that anyone in our community can afford a share. Because you lease a portion of the herd, you are entitled to a portion of the goats' product (raw milk). You come to the farm each week to pick up your share of the product. Your lease is month-to-month, and if at any time you wish to stop leasing your share, you can let us know. The one-time fee is non-refundable, but if you cancel in the middle of the month, we will pro-rate a refund of your monthly feed/housing/care fee.
About our milk: we DO NOT use anti-biotics on any animals on our farm unless it is a matter of life or death for that animal. Should we need to treat an animal with anti-biotics, she will be removed from the milking line-up that is used for herd shares. She will be milked into separate containers from those used for herd shares. If needed, she will also be physically separated from the rest of the herd until she is well.
We DO NOT feed our animals GMO crops. We are working to grow our own hay as well as some of the grains used in our custom mix (Black oil sunflower seed, barley, oats). The hay and grains we grow are not certified organic, however we never use chemicals (herbicides, pesticides, or manufactured fertilizers) on our land. Our goal is to grow all of our livestock feed on our own land so that we can assure only the highest quality, cleanest feed is used.
If you have questions about our goats or the quality of our milk, please don't hesitate to contact us.
