About Summer Solstice Farms
The Summer Solstice marks the beginning of summer season and is celebrated on the longest day of the year. The long summer days remind us of our carefree childhoods spent running through fields, building forts, and catching frogs. While our activities now include tending the garden, caring for the animals, and planting crops, we still enjoy being outside, especially during those long summer days.
Summer Solstice Farms started as a dream to own a patch of land that we could use to grow our own food. At the time, we worked as farmhands on a small cattle ranch in Colorado, in addition to our full-time jobs. We grew a bountiful garden, but we weren't allowed to have our own livestock. When we moved to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, we purchased 40 acres and a small cabin in the woods. Our desire to be self-sustainable motivated the purchase of our first chickens, followed a year later by dairy goats and meat rabbits. As our farming dreams grew, so did our need for more usable land. In the spring of 2013, we moved to a 70 acre farmstead in Carney, Michigan. After 3 years there, a job transfer moved us to Deputy, Indiana (~45 minutes north of Louisville, KY). We spent summer 2016 getting our feet underneath us at our new 40 acre farm, and we've established pasture and erected fences to accommodate our small Dexter cattle herd and dairy goats. Our market garden grows a little bit each year as we aim to produce vegetables and fruits to feed our community throughout the year. We sell our grass-fed, grass-finished beef, goat meat, and vegetables at the Madison Farmers' Market in Madison, Indiana.
At Summer Solstice Farms, we use natural and organic methods to keep both the animals and the land in good health (e.g. rabbit manure is great fertilizer in the garden). We are a diversified farm, which will help to keep nature in balance. We use companion planting to ward off pests and diseases in the garden, and we plant cover crops to use as green manure, which replenishes nutrients in the soil. We practice pasture rotation and crop rotation for the myriad benefits they provide.
